The San San Pond Sak Manatee and Turtle Tour is an adventure through the protected San San Pond Sak wetlands on the mainland of Bocas del Toro.
Recognized as a Ramsar site, this network of rivers and lagoons is home to endangered manatees, while the neighbouring beaches are the nesting site of huge leatherback sea turtles. Depending on the time of year, visitors will have the opportunity to spot both of these rare and breathtaking creatures during a stay on the picturesque river San San. Guests will be in awe of the region’s biodiversity including sloths, river otters, white-faced monkeys, and iguanas. Visitors will leave the San San Pond Sak wetlands with a renewed connection with the earth, and a greater appreciation for the complexities of the wetlands eco-system.
Making a Difference:
AAMVECONA strives to conserve and protect the San San Pond Sak eco-system through the development of activities which also benefit the local community. Turtle monitoring programs have generated the opportunity for environmental education and awareness, as well as providing a source of income for the residents thanks to the arrival of volunteers, researchers, and tourists.
AAMVECONA also works with local artisans to promote products such as bags woven from discarded plastic bags – reducing the amount of dangerous waste contaminating the Wetlands at the same time as supporting local artisans.
